On
entering the museum, the visitor is symbolically received by Mr.
Pedro de Xérez, a Notary Public for the Town Council and the Government,
incarnated in a lay figure dressed in 16th century style clothing.
Behind him there is a reproduction of the well-known painting
depicting the second foundation of Buenos Aires by Juan de Garay,
beside whom the notary public mentioned above appears "attesting
" the deed. This painting was a gift from Notary Public Jorge
Garrido, on the basis of whose valuable collection and other important
subsequent contributions this museum was organized. An interesting
exhibit is the authenticated photocopy of Carlos Gardel's holographic
will, attested by Notary Public Felipe Ibáñez on August 21, 1935,
and dated November 7, 1933, which states that the singer was of
French nationality. General Bartolomé Mitre, creator of the Notaries
Public General Government Office on August 21, 1863, is particularly
remembered. Interesting exhibits include manuscripts signed by
the country's forefathers, original documents signed by famous
notaries public, and a copy of the records drawn up during the
May Week of 1810 authorized by the notary public of the Town Council.
Also on exhibition is the original deed of sale of Maria, a black
female slave of 14 years of age, to Mrs. Manuela Balladanes, for
280 Pesos, on March 23, 1808. Over 100,000 volumes - notarial
protocols dating back to 1901 - form the notarial archive pertaining
to an activity of an importance that becomes evident after a visit
to this museum.
