Thanks
to the initiative and generosity of the historian and numismatist
José Evaristo Uriburu (1886 -1956), who was also first vice president
of the Central Bank, this Museum was created on May 30, 1941,
on the basis of sundry elements and collections of coins, bank
notes and documents from the Conversion Fund, National Public
Credit and other agencies, totaling approximately 15,000 pieces.
Complete coin collections are exhibited, together with emissions
of paper money, under different denominations (Pesos, Argentine
Pesos, Australes). Other interesting exhibits include the unification
of money (1880), "patacones"; the first gold coins - "escudos"
-of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata, minted by the
Assembly of 1813; gold and silver coins from the Province of La
Rioja (1821), coins from the Mint (1827), the Argentine Confederation
(1854), and Córdoba Mint (1884).
Of particular interest are the private issues made by Justo José
de Urquiza (the half "real"); Julio popper the Rumanian engineer
who minted pieces (1 and 5 grams) in 1889, in El Páramo, Tierra
del Fuego; and Amelio Antonio Touneus, who also minted pieces
for the "Kingdom of Araucaria and Patagonia" in 1874. Also on
exhibition are elements used by the natives prior to the Spanish
Conquest as a means of payment. The Museum also has a library
that is kept permanently updated through the purchase of new books,
catalogues and other publications related to numismatics and monetary
history.
