This museum was founded by Dr. Rosa D'Alessio de Carnevale Bonino
in 1970. It arose from the need to preserve pharmaceutical wealth,
and its creation was also fostered by the work carried out by
Dr. Ricardo López.
The first step was to gather caramel-coloured jars (mementoes
of old chemist shops), some of which had been brought over from
Germany, from the Course of Pharmaceutical Techniques. This collection
of jars was enlarged by the addition of stoves, scales, mortars,
retorts and more jars. In December 1982, it was set up in its
current location, across the corridor from the Museum of Botany.
Additional elements were successively incorporated, such as pots
and jars with wide and narrow necks, for powders and liquids respectively;
special flasks with pouring spouts for syrups and extracts; copper
stills (distilled water was produced in the old School of Medicine
on Córdoba St., now School of Economics); a machine from the "Sydney-Ross"
pharmaceutical company that manufactures the famous "Ross pills";
the Carlo Herba castor oil manufacturing machine; a copper device
to make cold syrup; a scarifier to administer vaccines, etc.
Also of interest are the diplomas belonging to Gustavo Frers (1845)
and Alejo Ángel Moine (1839), dating back to the times of Rosas.
