At
the turn of the century, towards 1902, one of the first brick
houses in the Vuelta de Rocha area was being built as a center
for the Socialist Committee amongst whose members was Mr. Alfredo
Palacios.
This large old house, located in a picturesque area permeated
with historical significance, harbours the only wax museum in
our country. This museum reflects a historical sequence of life
in the Río de la Plata: the Conquest, the two foundations of Buenos
Aires, the natives and marginal urban dwellers, their typical
duels included. There are wax figures of famous members of the
expeditions arriving at the Riachuelo de los Navíos, like Magellan,
Solís, Cabot, Hernandarias, Mendoza and Garay.
Exhibits also include figures of southern tribal chiefs: Calfucurá,
Namuncurá, Catriel and Pincen. Cockfighting scenes and marginal
tango combine with farm hands or noteworthy persons such as Brown,
Rosas, Jorge Garrido, Cecilio Madanes, Quinquela Martín and Juan
de Dios Filiberto. Also included are La Boca volunteer fire-fighters
(the first of their kind in the world), and the Liberti and Carbonari
brothers. Different waxwork techniques may be observed, and there
is a description of all the different possibilities of creating
a wax figure, whether through imagination, replica or copy.
