This
museum was created on October 26, 1966, in commemoration of the
75th anniversary of the Bank. It was installed on the first floor
of the monumental building conceived by Alejandro Bustillo in
Greco-Roman style. The Bank was founded by Carlos Pellegrini in
1891. Due to the crisis of 1890, it was originally established
on the plot of land that had belonged to Garay, and was later
to be the location of the Colón Theatre. It was built by Engineer
Carlos Enrique Pellegrini, Carlos' father. The museum was basically
devoted to the collection, preservation and exhibition of relics
and objects related to the institution, as well as records of
argentine economic history.
Documents, shares, checks and bank notes of the Banco de Buenos
Aires and the Banco Nacional de las Provincias Unidas del Río
de la Plata, are neatly displayed together with safe boxes, various
machines and objects, and a complete numismatic collection. The
specialized library houses more than 200 volumes, and the historical
archive includes over 3,000 objects such as gold ounces; coins
from the colonial period minted in Potosí in 1575; a collection
of argentine Pesos (1813), one of the most significant collections
existing at present; pieces from the federal period; 50 million
Peso bonds issued by the Conversion Fund, and a replica of "The
Athletes" Fountain by the sculptor, José Zorrilla de San Martín,
donated by the Banco de la República Oriental del Uruguay in commemoration
of the 50th anniversary of the Banco de la Nación Argentina.
