The
Foundation that bears his name and was created after Palacio's
death, that occurred on April 20, 1965, at the age of 85, is mainly
devoted to the preservation of the house and the memory of this
writer, lawyer, professor, politician, Congress Representative,
senator and ambassador.
The house was turned into a museum, and harbors an important library
with approximately 30,000 volumes by both classical and modem
authors, on all branches of human knowledge. These obviously include
the 45 books written by Palacios, a "20th century musketeer",
as he has aptly been called, and a promoter of the aerostation
(he was a friend of Jorge Newbery), as well as the first and youngest
Socialist Congress Representative in America.
Furniture, objects and souvenirs of the long career of this renowned
public man are on exhibition. Palacios lived from the age of twenty
in this house on Charcas street. On one occasion, the owner wished
to evict him. The house was finally auctioned off, and its buyer,
Notary Public Alfonso Romanelli, offered it to Palacios as a gift.
Palacios turned down the offer and Romanelli countered by refusing
to be paid a rent. Definitely unforgettable were Palacio's moustache,
his broad-rimmed soft hat and his Panama hat (according to the
season), and his "poncho" or typical shawl.
