This
gallant training ship made 37 trips around the world. It has properly
been said that the "President Sarmiento" Frigate - thus named
in honour of the founder of the Naval School - is a gallant and
noble vessel that has endured and conquered every tempest and
overcome every passion.
It was launched in an English shipyard on August 31, 1897, its
steel hull lined in wood and copper plates. The vessel arrived
in 1898 and made its first training voyage between January 12,
1899, and September 30, 1900. Its last voyage was made between
April 18 and December 7 of 1938.
The exhibits on show inside the vessel include mementoes of its
participation in historical events, such as its presence at the
coronation ceremony of Edward VII of England and Alphonse XIII
of Spain; or when it entertained Czar Nicholas II of Russia on
board, as well as the German Kaiser, President Taft of the United
States, Amelia, Queen of Portugal, and the leaders of different
countries.
It was also present at the celebrations organised when the Panama
Canal was opened, and was assigned an important mission during
the ceremonies that took place when the statue of San Martín was
inaugurated in Boulogne Sur Mer, France, and that of Belgrano
in Genoa, Italy.
