This museum is considered one of the most important of its kind
in Latin America. It was created in 1980, after several frustrated
attempts.
In 1977, Professor Orestes Walter Sciutti initiated it from his
chair of Dental Surgical Techniques in the School of Odontology,
on the basis of the collection assembled by his father, Dr Orestes
José Sciutti, which amounted to approximately 400 pieces. Further
donations increased the Museum's wealth, and with the authorization
of Dr Lionel R. de la Serna, the School Dean at that moment, an
adequate location was prepared to house the museum in the School
hall, under the direction of architect Segarra.
At present, approximately 1,600 pieces are on exhibition, many
of them of great historical and emotional value. These include
furniture and dental cabinets x-ray sets; instruments, prostheses
specimens of pathological anatomy; photographs; diplomas and symbolic
odontological objects coming from the Otavale pre-Columbian civilization.
The image of Saint Apolonia, patron saint of Odontology and of
those who suffer from toothaches, stands next to the bust of Mr.
Ricardo C. Guardo, founder of the School in 1976. In the exhibition
hall surrounding the Museum, Doctors Mauricio González Catán,
Ignacio Imaz, Nicasio Etchepareborda and Guardo are honoured.
Several paintings stand out made with material related to the
profession, particularly teeth. There is also a module of a consulting
room where Dr. Carlos Coquet's (1850) diploma is exhibited together
with a painting titled "Dog suffering from a toothache".
