This museum was created on October 28, 1968, and in 1973, it was permanently established on the first floor of the "Farmacia de la Estrella" (La Estrella Chemist Shop), a traditional house built in 1894. It can well be said that it reflects the "memory of the city", since it is devoted to the research, preservation and exhibition of every aspect related to the history of Buenos Aires, through the objects that its people have produced. It therefore harbors collections of a wide assortment of objects and documents ranging from post cards, a stove, architectural pieces, photographs, plans, etc., in addition to stories about the city's inhabitants.
Throughout the years, hundreds of exhibitions have been held, since the idea, from the very beginning, was to renew exhibitions every two to three months. Another of the museum's functions has been to offer counsel on buildings and places of historic interest and value, as well as offering suggestions on the means of updating their value.
Its collections include tires, railings, doors and windows, stained -glass windows, fillets, chamber pots, post cards, early 20th century moulds for the manufacture of flagstones, photographs, pieces of furniture, popular mates (gourds), and a wide assortment of everyday objects. The San Pedro Telmo Fair held at Dorrego Square on week-ends can be considered an extension of this museum.
