This
museum was inaugurated on March 16, 1968, on the 156th anniversary
of the creation of the Regiment of Mounted Grenadiers created
by General José de San Martín. In the "Hall of Great Symbols of
San Martín" is the shrine in which the Liberator´s curved sabre
is kept and guarded. This is by far the most important relic in
the museum.
In the hall of "San Martinian Iconography" one can appreciate
an oil painting by Gil de Castro from 1817, and two large Sévres
vases with illustrations evoking the freedom campaign, and a replica
of the sword used by San Martín while he was rendering services
to the Spanish army.
In the hall known as "San Martín and his Officers", in addition
to paintings by Casanovas from the beginning of the century representing
the principal officers that accompanied this freedom fighter,
there is a "mate" (gourd) belonging to General Lavalle, and the
presidential desk used by Julio A. Roca.. In other halls one can
contemplase old uniforms used by the regiment, a diorama depicting
the Battle of San Lorenzo, weapons and documents related to the
main war actions as well as old photographs.
