This
Museum originated in an exhibition that took place in Retiro station
of the Mitre Railway line in 1968. It was first set up in an office
belonging to this railway line, then in Galerías Pacífico, and
finally in a beautifully refurbished old cargo shed. The Institute
of Historical Research, with a 4,000 volume library, carried out
its work simultaneously. There are many interesting exhibits,
such as the original scale model of Once station; the iron railings
of Parque station of the Western Railway Line (site from where
"La Porteña" engine set off, and which is presently occupied by
the Colón Theatre); the scale model of a Belgrano railway carriage;
silver ware from the dining-room coaches, and dishes from the
presidential carriage a bedspread from the sleeping car used by
Pope John Paul II in 1982; and the coach in which the Italian
President Giovanni Gronchi traveled in 1961, which also carried
President Guido's committee in 1963, and President Illia in 1965.
Also on exhibition are telephones, telegraphs, clocks, comets,
bells, employee uniforms, teletypes, forges, pieces of furniture
and other items from the passenger carriages (the decorated washbasins
are particularly noteworthy), in addition to kitchenware.
