Mr. José Arce, a prestigious physician and diplomat, proposed
the creation of this Museum, and to that end, in 1961, he donated
the house that was later declared a National Historical Site by
virtue of law 16.432 of December 1, 1962. The Roca Museum is an
Institute for Historical Research, devoted to evoking the life
and work of Lt. General Julio A. Roca, and of the members of the
so-called "Generation of the '80s ". The Museum was inaugurated
on July 17, 1964, on the 121st anniversary of Rocas birth.
Mr. Arce himself - one of the exhibition rooms is devoted to him
- took charge of the task of organization, thus revealing his
scientifical, educational and historiographic knowledge. He devoted
his efforts to setting up a center for educational and informative
purposes, to be consulted by scholars, through the versatile work
of one of the most eminent Argentine statesmen (twice President
of the country, 1880 - 1886 and 1898 1904), as well as minister
and senator.
The Museum has an important documentary archive, consisting of
original collections of writings and printed matter, photographs,
iconography, medals and objects, in addition to a specialized
library. A modern room is devoted to Roca. It contains a full-length
painting of him made by Alice, as well as photographs, writings,
medals and documents that serve to illustrate this statesman's
life.
