This
Museum is under the authority of the A.N.L.I.S. "Dr Carlos G.
Malbrán" Administration of the National Institute for the Production
of Biological Products, and is devoted in particular to ophidians
and spiders, their habits and the dangers they pose when they
are poisonous.
A map of the country is divided into areas depicting the geographical
distribution of the different types of snakes (rattle snakes,
coral snakes, small "yararás " (pit vipers), large "yararás "
or pit vipers, snub-nosed yararás, yararacas, caisacas and yararacasús).
Another graph describes how one should behave in the presence
of a snake. Amongst the dangerous snakes listed are the coral
snakes (elapids), pit snakes and rattle snakes (crotalidae), and
amongst the harmless snakes, false coral snakes, false pit snakes
or "yararás" and other snakes (small snakes and Argentine boas)
exhibited in glass cases.
There are four "terrariums" containing live samples of the poisonous
specimens existing in large numbers in our country. Guided tours
offer the possibility of appreciating how snakes are dealt with
in captivity, how they are held, how poison is extracted, etc.
Other cases exhibit invertebrates (scolopendrids, spiders, scorpions),
fish, amphibians (batrachians) and poisonous snakes from other
parts of the world.
