Between
the 15th and 16th centuries this location was an administrative
and military Indian center built and run by the Inca empire or Tawantisuyo.
The city area stands on the last spurs of the Sierra de Zapata where
the Quimivil valley unfolds. It is composed of over 100 architectonic
structures made of stone and mortar that cover several levels distributed
alongside the Inca Road. There is also a Plaza de Armas (main square)
and a space for ceremonies, as well as aqueducts, large sheds and
communal storerooms. This site is being reconstructed with the technical
assistance of the University of La Plata. At the entrance to the
ruins is the museum where the interpretation center functions.
Amongst the objects exhibited there are pieces found in the excavations
and plans and historical information of the Indian town.
Londres
This is the second oldest city in Argentina and is situated in the
northwest of the province. It is located on national route No. 40,
14km. away from the city of Belén, and 1,200m. above sea level.
Londres lies 271km. away from the city of Catamarca, and the fastest
way to get there on a paved route is by taking national route No.
38 up to its intersection with national route No. 60 which goes
into the province of La Rioja, and then switch to route No. 40.
The whole area has a vast wealth of archaeological sites since there
were Indian settlements in the region.
