This
museum was inaugurated in 1977 and functions in the Principal Room
of an old 19th century house. Amongst its wealth of exhibits, there
is a gallery of portraits of governors covering the period comprised
between 1821 and 1966. Also on display are the armchairs that belonged
to the old National Congress and were used by notable legislators
such as Sarmiento, Roca, Pellegrini, del Valle and others.
The museum owns a presentation copy of the Provincial Constitution
of 1895 and the original plan of the city of Catamarca of 1886.
It also harbors medals, period photographs and a specialized library.

The capital of the province is located 1,145km. away from the city
of Buenos Aires and 520m. above sea level. To get to this city from
Buenos Aires one must take national route No. 9 up to Córdoba and
then carry on down national route No. 60. The city is definitely
colonial in style and its main attractions are its temples and convents,
the most outstanding of which is the convent of San Francisco. The
site known as Cuesta del Portezuelo is very near the city and offers
a panoramic view of the entire valley.
