This
area has important archaeological sites dating back thousands of
years, and other sites belonging to Incan and pre-Incan cultures
(La Alumbrera, El Coypar, El Coyparcito). Amongst the objects exhibited
in this museum, there are pieces gathered in agricultural and farming
sites, such as ceramics and instruments for everyday use made of
stone, bone and wood. The different cultures are presented following
a didactic criterion, with references to their periods and characteristics.
Antofagasta
de la Sierra
This is the largest and most unpopulated department in Catamarca.
Economically and geographically it forms part of the region known
as the Puna de Atacama. Its environmental conditions correspond
to a high altitude desert. The town is located 3,365m. above sea
level on provincial route No. 43, which is a consolidated dirt road,
and is 557km. away from the city of Catamarca.
