It started off as a private museum, but the entire collection was
later donated to the municipality and officialized. Noteworthy exhibits
include pieces belonging to the Diaguita culture with a strong influence
from the Aguada culture. The museum receives technical counseling
from the University of La Plata. There is a mummified body in a
glass case that was found in an Indian tomb, and dates back approximately
to 1,300 A.D.. Amongst the exhibits there are ceramic pieces and
amorphous statuettes belonging to the Ciénaga culture, as well as
pipes for inhaling hallucinogenic drugs. There are also skulls belonging
to adult males and females and vessels pertaining to the Incaic
period (1400 to 1530) and to the early period (350 B.C.) of the
Condorhuasi culture.
