This
small temple harbors the house where José de San Martín our country´s
greatest forefather was born on February 25, 1778. The house has
three rooms with 80 cm - thick walls made of bricks bonded with
mortar that were manufactured in the Jesuitical missions. It was
impossible to preserve the roof. Inside the building there is an
urn containing the remains of San Martín´s father who was the governor
of Yapeyú. The construction of this small temple was begun in 1925
and it was inaugurated in 1938 during the government of Agustín
P. Justo.
Yapeyú
The town of Yapeyú stands as a landmark in Argentine history since
it was the birthplace of General San Martín. It is located 380km
away from the city of Corrientes down national routes No.12, 123
and 14. This town was originally a Jesuitical reduction.
