José Museum and Palace

on route No. 39 in the locality of Caseros, 30 km. away from Concepción

This
palace is a magnificent 19th century treasure the construction of
which was ordered by General Justo José de Urquiza in 1848 to be
used as a residence for his family. His study witnessed the drawing
up of the National Constitution, and it was here that he was assassinated.
A visit to the palace covers its five yards, 30 halls and its artificial
lake. The new amended constitution was sworn here in 1994. It was
declared a National Historic Monument in 1935, and harbors a magnificent
collection of paintings and, furniture. It also includes a chapel
with a marble baptismal font dating from 1850-1870 that is a replica
of the one in the Vatican, as well as coach houses, a forge, a historical
archive and a library specialized in argentine history.

This city and port located on the banks of the Uruguay River was
founded in 1783 and is 261km.distant from Paraná. One can reach
it by driving down national route No. 12 and provincial route No.
39. It was the provincial capital until the second half of the 19th
century. The remains of General Justo José de Urquiza rest to the
left of the high altar in the Cathedral. The city is renowned for
its historical wealth and educational instutions. The site known
as the San José Palace, where General Urquiza lived and died, lies
35km. away from the city center.
