This
church is definitely American in style, dates from 1691 and still
preserves its original one-meter thick adobe walls. It was declared
a National Historic Monument. The tower stands separate from the
main building. Its high altar was carved by hand in wood and is
adorned with thin sheets of gold. It has no images but paintings
from the Cuzco school, amongst which the most noteworthy is "Angels
armed with harquebuses". The natives had no knowledge of angels,
but some winged creatures formed part of the world they knew. So
they represented the conquistadors with wings and dressed in period
costumes.
