Diaguita culture and Tiahuanaco in Bolivia. There is an excellently
preserved mummy on display complete with hair eye-lashes, nails,
garments and buckles. There is also material from the period of
the Inca Empire that occupied part of the Argentine Northwest between
1480 and 1520.
There is a reproduction of one of the graves discovered during the
archaeological recovery work carried out on the urban plan of Tilcara.
Tilcara
Tilcara is located on national route No. 9,84km. away from San Salvador
de Jujuy and 2,461m above sea level. This town was founded approximately
in the year 1600 and is characteristic of the "Quebrada" with its
"Collas" (Indians from the northwest) and its multicolored mountains.
The erection of its church began in 1797, but was only completed
in 1865. The entire area has a vast archaeological wealth, and its
main site is the "Pucará de Tilcara" (Pucará: fortress).
