This museum was inaugurated in January 1990 by Fortunato Farfán,
its creator and first director. The building occupied by the museum
is the oldest house in the town and dates back to approximately
1650. Its has adobe walls and a mud and straw roof. It belonged
to Laureano Saravia, chief of police and political leader of Santa
Catalina, and commander-in-chief of the troops of the Puna. The
museum harbors archaeological and ethnographic pieces in addition
to historical documents dating from colonial times, and folkloric
objects from the Puna. There are also several pieces of lithic material.
There are gaucho costumes made of barracán (special material made
with llama wool in different checked motifs), silver coins and religious
objects such as rosaries, prayer books and scapulars.
Santa
Catalina
The town of Santa Catalina, capital of the department of the same
name, is located 338km. away from San Salvador de Jujuy and lies
3,802m above sea level. It is reached by taking national route No.
9 up to La Quiaca. This road is paved up to Humahuaca and then becomes
a consolidated dirt road. Then one must drive down provincial route
No. 5 towards the west. This is one of the highest areas in the
country and lies in the extreme north of the Argentine Republic.
The town is over 300 years old, and its architecture, with its typical
buildings, cobblestone streets and quaint old church is very picturesque.
