artists related to the customs and traditions of the inhabitants
of Tilcara. Terry was born in Buenos Aires, but visited Tilcara
and decided to settle here. He was born deaf-mute, but his parents
sent him to a special school in Europe where he learnt to speak
English, French and Spanish. All the paintings made by this artist
were based on models from the area and framed with wood obtained
from the cardón (a prickly local plant). The house that harbors
this museum has remained just as it was when it was built in 1880.
The walls are original.
Tilcara
Tilcara is located on national route No. 9,84km. away from San Salvador
de Jujuy and 2,461m above sea level. This town was founded approximately
in the year 1600 and is characteristic of the "Quebrada" with its
"Collas" (Indians from the northwest) and its multicolored mountains.
The erection of its church began in 1797, but was only completed
in 1865. The entire area has a vast archaeological wealth, and its
main site is the "Pucará de Tilcara" (Pucará: fortress).
