It was created in August 1997. It harbors archaeological pieces,
paintings by local artists, clothing and other objects related to
the everyday life of the local population. This material was collected
and classified by Leopoldo Aban during his lifetime and further
items were supplied by the townspeople.

This area was originally referred to as the Argentine Siberia because
on account of the height, the weather is freezing cold. It is located
216km. away from San Salvador de Jujuy and lies 3,484m above sea
level. It is reached down national route No. 9 which becomes a consolidated
dirt road from Humahuaca on. This city came into existence with
the arrival of the railroad in 1907.
