Like
many of the museums in this area, this one was built around the
original collection that Medardo Pantoja, a native of Tilcara, assembled
throughout his lifetime. Pantoja is one of the most representative
artists of Latin American painting. His works always reflect the
scenery, people and customs of our land. He furthered his studies
in Buenos Aires under the supervision of the master Lino Enea Spilimbergo.
The Foundation housing this museum is also a cultural center in
which exhibitions, courses and lectures are organized and audiovisuals
are shown.
Tilcara
Tilcara is located on national route No. 9,84km. away from San Salvador
de Jujuy and 2,461m above sea level. This town was founded approximately
in the year 1600 and is characteristic of the "Quebrada" with its
"Collas" (Indians from the northwest) and its multicolored mountains.
The erection of its church began in 1797, but was only completed
in 1865. The entire area has a vast archaeological wealth, and its
main site is the "Pucará de Tilcara" (Pucará: fortress).
