Ruins of the most important pre-Hispanic population of the "Quebrada
de Humahuaca". This site is under the supervision of the "Dr. Eduardo
Casanova" Archaeological Museum. One of the many fortresses forming
a chain all along the Quebrada was partially reconstructed respecting
the original layout in keeping with in-depth research work. This
"Pucará" commands the entire view of the access to the "Quebrada".
It stands on a hill 70m high at the foot of which is the high altitude
botanical garden which harbors typical vegetation from the "Quebrada"
and the "Puna". A visil to the Archaeological Museum of Tilcara
provides greater insight into the lifestyle of the inhabitants of
these fortresses.
Tilcara
Tilcara is located on national route No. 9, 84km. away from San

with its "Collas" (Indians from the northwest) and its multicolored
mountains. The erection of its church began in 1797, but was only
completed in 1865. The entire area has a vast archaeological wealth,
and its main site is the "Pucará de Tilcara" (Pucará: fortress).
