The
collection that gave rise to this museum was originally assembled
in one of the halls of the Folkloric Museum. The pieces were later
transferred to the Museum of Sacred Art upon the condition that
a Costume Museum be created. Its three halls contain exhibits ranging
from costumes worn last century to present day clothing. Micheli,
a tradicional shoe-shop in La Rioja, donated a large number of shoes
and period advertisements that adorn the walls. Well-established
families donated ladies' and men´s costumes belonging to last century.
Also on exhibition are different types of sewing machines and accessories
such as necklaces, gloves, handbags, fans and mantillas. There are
also party dresses, work clothes, military uniforms, tail coats
and top hats.
La Rioja
The city of La Rioja, capital of the province with the same name,
lies at the foot of the Sierra de Velasco. The characteristic features
of a Spanish colonial city blend with an active and lively commercial
center. It is located 1,167km. away from the city of Buenos Aires
and lies 500m. above sea level. To reach this city one must travel
down national route No. 9 up to the city of Córdoba and then take
national route No. 38.
