Cuipan
Huasi Regional Museum
Located
on national route No. 40
Tel. 0827-97006
Cuipan is located 15km. away from San Blas de los Sauces. Nestled
in an area of valleys and mountains, it was known as the "Valley
of Vice" during the period of colonization. There were important
Indian settlements in the area where the Aguada and Draconian cultures
flourished. Archaeological remains of these cultures include pottery,
lithic material, statuettes, axes and mortars. Vestiges of these
cultures also remain in surnames and proper names that derive from
the Cacán language, studied by the archaeologist Eric Boman.
This museum was established upon the initiative of don Tomás Artemio
Ortiz, a rural teacher who was deeplv involved in the cultural life
of the region. Thanks to the archaeological and historical material
contributed by the local inhabitants, he was able to set up this
museum. It harbors over 500 exhibits, the most outstanding of which
is the pulpit of San Blas.
San Blas de los Sauces
San Blas de los Sauces is the capital of the department with the
same name. To reach this town one must travel down national route
No. 75 up to Aimogasta, then switch to national route No. 60 for
38km. until its intersection with national route No. 40. From there
on there are 12km. to San Blas.
