This
museum operates in the 'Casa de los Moreira' (home of the Moreira
family), the construction of which began towards the end of the
17th century. The house underwent several reforms and enlargements
until it was acquired in 1870 by Ramón Moreira, a prosperous landowner
and business man who reformed it, finished the gallery and entrance,
laid the limestone floor and erected the Italian style front. The
museum began to operate here in 1969. One of its halls is devoted
to Mythology and is dedicated to the art of ceramics, giving life
to different figures representing native divinities such as the
'Pachamama' (mother earth), 'Yacumama' (goddess of water), or 'Huayra'
(god or myth of the wind). In the Chapel Hall there are altars,
images and mangers representing the typical Christmas customs in
La Rioja. The Kitchen Hall offers insight into a provincial home
with its typical cooking stove, wooden plates and baked clay pots.
The Bedroom Hall honors an art that embellished family life in La
Rioja. Here one can appreciate woven articles of great artistic
value, since weaving is one of the most popular and widespread crafts
in the province. In the Storehouse Hall exhibits include all the
practical implements used daily by farmers in addition to the artifacts
employed in the production of brandy of different qualities and
wines. Finally, in the Silverwork Hall one can appreciate a collection
of mates, promises or former vows, large knives, vessels, trays,
spurs and artistically decorated bits.
La Rioja
The city of La Rioja, capital of the province with the same name,
lies at the foot of the Sierra de Velasco. The characteristic features
of a Spanish colonial city blend with an active and lively commercial
center. It is located 1,167km. away from the city of Buenos Aires
and lies 500m. above sea level. To reach this city one must travel
down national route No. 9 up to the city of Córdoba and then take
national route No. 38.
