This
museum operates in the Cultural Center. Famatina, in Quechua, means
"mother of metals", and was one of the most important Diaguita towns
dedicated to working the silver and gold mines. Amongst other valuable
pieces, there are three menhirs on display that presided the rites
of the native fartners asking for water for their sown land. The
museum functions in this colonial house which has been totally restored.
Famatina
This town is the capital of the department of Famatina and is located
225km. away from the city of La Rioja, at a distance of 12km. from
national route No. 40, on provincial route No. 11. It lies on the
eastern slopes of the Famatina massif 1,470m. above sea level. It
is an area of vineyards and walnut trees and the starting point
for several excursions by car or on horseback.
