This
museum was built around the exhibition father Angel Nardillo owned
in the town of Vinchigasta. In 1974 he donated it to the province,
and in 1980 it was put on exhibition in a closed gallery belonging
to the Folkloric Museum. People gradually began making donations
and some exhibits on loan remained in the museum on a permanent
basis. A noteworthy donation was made by the Catedral.
Exhibits include the old pulpit and different priestly ornaments
such as stoles, chasubles and the banners granted to the Cathedral
by the parishes of the provínces in 1920 when the image of Saint
Nicholas was adorned with a halo. These items are made of natural
silk embroidered with gold and silk threads, and bugle heads and
sequins. Another important donation was made by the Convent of Santo
Domingo: a pulpit and the altar of Saint Catherine which is assembled
in two pieces since it is 101/2m. high.
Its four halls also exhibit pieces of religious imagery, paintings
from the Cuzco school, candelabra, iron crosses, priestly ornaments,
scapulars, and a collection of mass books.
La Rioja
The city of La Rioja, capital of the province with the same name,
lies at the foot of the Sierra de Velasco. The characteristic features
of a Spanish colonial city blend with an active and lively commercial
center. It is located 1,167km. away from the city of Buenos Aires
and lies 500m. above sea level. To reach this city one must travel
down national route No. 9 up to the city of Córdoba and then take
national route No. 38.
