This
museum was created by the Science Club of Aimogasta in 1971. lt
harbors regional, archaeological and biological pieces in addition
to woven fabrics, craftwork and popular imagery. It also houses
an interesting collection of fans, a sunshade made of only one piece,
a Japanese lacquered table, coffeepots, the first thermos bottle
that arrived from the U.S., turnstiles, an iron and a saddle dating
back to the period of the Conquest of the Desert. There are also
stuffed animals such as condors, iguanas and flamingoes. Enclosed
in glass cases there are skulls, human bones, statuettes, a collection
of classified stones from the Cerro de la Cruz, bird skeletons and
a collection of coins and paper money.
Aimogasta
Aimogasta is the capital of the department of Arauco and is located
130km. away from the city of La Rioja on national route No. 75.
It lies on the last spurs of Sierra de Velasco and has large olive
plantations. The oldest olive tree in the country stands very near
the town of Arauco and dates back to the 17th century.
