THE IMPRESSIVE CAÑÓN DE TALAMPAYA
This is one of the most spectacular natural wonders of Argentina. In some places the canyon is only 80m wide with vertical walls of nearly 150m. Condors look down from the heights; these enormous birds, ever watchful of visitors, fly down from their refuge and hover in the air. There are many strange rock formations like El Tablero de Ajedrez (The Chessboard), Los Balcones (The Balconies), Los Frailes (The Friars) or Los Reyes Magos (The Three Kings). You should pay a visit to La Ciudad Perdida (The Lost City) and see the pictographs sketched on the rocks by the indians. |

THE ROUTE OF THE CAUDILLOS
The famous red-earthed Riojan plains begin in Patquía. You can start the route in Olta, where fossilized plant matter has been found, and after a stop-off in the Parque Provincial Guasamayo, you reach Malanzán where you can see the large rock known as El Elefante. From the top of the hill called Tama there is a superb panoramic view of the white peaks of Famatina in the distance. |

Other places of interest
From the town of Chilecito there is an excursion to Santa Florentina and to the River Amarillo. From Villa Unión you reach Vinchina, with its seismographic observatory and where you can see the coloured mosaics known as Las Estrellas (The Stars). In the gorge, la Quebrada de la Troya, you can see spectacular rock formations. The high valley of Jagüé is an expanse of green at the foot of the Cerro Bonete. |
