This
is a historical and archaeological museum comprising 5 halls. It
harbors numerous pieces belonging to the Vuluco culture that developed
in the Barrancas area. Exhibits include arrowheads made of lithic
material, amphoras and wooden mortars. There is also pottery from
the agricultural and ceramic period and an unusual unique piece:
a "fishtail" projectile point from the pre-ceramic period dating
back to 9000 years before Christ. Also on exhibition are numerous
objects that belonged to the Incaic culture of the 15th century.
The museum occupies a historical building that used to be the home
of José Alberto Ozamis, one of the founders of Maipú. The house
was built in 1810, its adobe walls are 60 m. thick and it has a
single low-pitched roof. Some of the walls, doors and floors are
original. The museum was created in 1969 to preserve this valuable
collection. The building also houses an important library.
Maipú
Maipú is at the doorway to the city of Mendoza, distant 18
km. from the capital. To get there one must take the expressway
of the route that coincides with national route No.40 or the Southern
Access - Juan José Paso Branch - that goes to Luján de Cuyo, where
there is also a number of large wineries.
