This
house was built in 1840 and belonged to Juan de la Cruz Videla,
an important farm owner and property owner of Maipú. The house was
used as a shelter for the victims and survivors of the earthquake
that occurred in 1861. It was also the seat of the headquarters
of the 4th Regiment of National Guards, after which it housed a
school and was also the administrative and political center of Maipú.
The building has a large central rectangular courtyard surrounded
by galleries. It has three domes and an upper floor above the main
entrance. It was declared a National Historical Monument. The construction
is only one story, high and covers 1,800sq.m. It has a magnificent
neo-gothic oratory and its adobe walls are one meter thick.
Maipú
Maipú is at the doorway to the city of Mendoza, distant 18
km. from the capital. To get there one must take the expressway
of the route that coincides with national route No.40 or the Southern
Access - Juan José Paso Branch - that goes to Luján de Cuyo, where
there is also a number of large wineries.
