This museum is located in an area limited by the Moyano Outlet to
the north; the Cacique Guaymallén Canal to the east; Ramo Plumerillo
(branch drain) to the south and by Hijuela Zapallar (branch drain)
to the west. The limits of the Andes Army training camp were fixed
by the military engineer Álvarez Cotidarco. In 1816, San Martín
commissioned Brigadier Bernardo O'Higgins to build the barracks
for the artillery. The Andes Army started off on its campaign from
this site in 1817. The adobe barracks with single low-pitched roofs
made of reed, mud and straw occupied between 60 and 70 blocks. These
barracks comprised living quarters, kitchens, outhouses, an artillery
repair workshop, shooting range and a military camp chapel. When
San Martín embarked on his campaign, he ordered the camp to be dismantled
as a military strategy and donated everything to the town. The museum
has a hall devoted to San Martín and includes a maquette reproducing
the entry of the army by sea to Peru. In 1996, the barracks were
rebuilt and now harbor pieces of furniture, uniforms and weapons
belonging to the Andes Army. A dramatization of military training
with period uniforms and weapons is performed the last Sunday of
every month. A column of people gets together on the 18th of January,
of each year to recreate the beginning of the Andes crossing.
