This
historical museum comprises five halls and operates in the house
that used to belong to the Molina Pico, a family with close ties
to the exploits of General San Martín, who donated the property
in 1785. It is one of the few constructions that were not destroyed
by the earthquake in 1861. Its architecture is a mixture of colonial
and local styles. The roof of the gallery is made of straw, arum
and mud supported by a frame made of poplar wood. The walls are
60cm. thick and the house has a basement dating from 1893 - closed
up by a mud wall nowadays- that was probably used as an escape way.
The park has several foreign species such as an ombú dating from
last century and several "aguaribay" trees. One of the museum's
halls is devoted to folklore, while the others contain furniture
and documents related to the Molina Pico family and to political
life in Mendoza. There are also a series of objects for everyday
use dating from the 19th century. All sorts of cultural activities
are organized in this building.
