This
museum comprises four halls devoted to history, archaeology and
natural sciences. Exhibits include different objects belonging to
the Atuel II culture including a prehistoric mummy of a baby with
its accouterments. There is also lithic material that is over 14,000
years old. Also on display are different items used by the Huarpes
and Pehuelches pertaining to the Atuel I culture. There are specimens
of the flora and fauna of the region on exhibition. The historical
sector focuses on the origins and development of the city, of San
Rafael. The museum has its own files, work section and laboratories.
It also harbors a library with over 25,000 books.
San Rafael
San Rafael is the second city in importance in the province. It
is an exceptional touristic center due to the variety and quality
of its attractions such as the Atuel River Canyon and the Valle
Grande, Los Reyunos, Agua del Toro and Nihuil dams that are ideal
for the practice of adventure tourism. It is also one of the most
important wine-producing areas. San Rafael lies 232 km. away from
the city of Mendoza down national routes No. 40 and 143.
