This museum specializes in contemporary painting and sculpture.
It was created in March 1948 when Julio Alberto Aguirre and his
wife, Elvira Villanueva Bombal, donated their collection of Paintings.
The museum harbors a wealth of over 300 works including paintings,
watercolors, drawings and sculptures. Many of them were Purchased
at the Acquisition Awards of the Spring Salon or were donated by
the National Endowment for the Arts. Amongst its most treasured
pieces are works by Lino Enea Spilimbergo, Raquel Forner, Juan Carlos
Castagnino, Antonio Berni and Benito Quinquela Martín, amongst others.
The museum also has a Popular library with over 44,000 volumes.
San Rafael
San Rafael is the second city in importance in the province. It
is an exceptional touristic center due to the variety and quality
of its attractions such as the Atuel River Canyon and the Valle
Grande, Los Reyunos, Agua del Toro and Nihuil dams that are ideal
for the practice of adventure tourism. It is also one of the most
important wine-producing areas. San Rafael lies 232 km. away from
the city of Mendoza down national routes No. 40 and 143.
