This
museum comprises 17 halls devoted to natural sciences with an ecological
approach. Some of its halls exhibit fossils found in the Malargüe
area and archaeological remains discovered in Barrancas. The main
hall has been set to reproduce an arctic area. Another of its halls
reproduces a tropical jungle with its flora and fauna. There are
specific sectors devoted to mineralogy, paleontology and anthropology.
Special emphasis is given to air, water and land ecosystems and
the manner in which animals adapt to their surroundings. The museum
also provides information concerning the manner in which areas affected
by environmental problems are treated. This institution was created
upon the initiative of four secondary schoolchildren in 1993. It
operates in a house built in 1910 that belonged to the owners of
La Colina de Oro winery. It is a one-story-high chalet with a small
basement built in classical French style.
Maipú
Maipú is at the doorway to the city of Mendoza, distant 18
km. from the capital. To get there one must take the expressway
of the route that coincides with national route No.40 or the Southern
Access - Juan José Paso Branch - that goes to Luján de Cuyo, where
there is also a number of large wineries.
