This
museum comprises seven halls and a basement and is devoted to American
and regional history. Exhibits include mortars, hubs of the wheels
of carts dragged by mules, replicas of objects from the Maya culture
and several antique objects donated to the museum by the townspeople
including a 19th century Italian piano, a machine for playing music
with metal records, an RCA radio from 1920 and a harmonium. On display
in one of the glass cases are some lace fans, large ornamental back
combs made of ivory, a key made of bone with a magnifying glass,
pruning shears, a small knitted metal purse and an American Indian
dance costume. There are also archaeological remains discovered
in the Barracas area belonging to the Agrelo and Viluco cultures.
One can also see projectile points from Malargüe, lithic material,
an 18th century Venetian coat of armor and weapons of different
calibers dating from the 19th century. The house in which this museum
operates was built in 1908 and belonged to the Furlotti family.
The construction is well preserved and still has its original pine-wood
ceilings, limestone tiles and 60cm.-thick walls.
Luján de Cuyo
Luján de Cuyo lies only 16km. away from the city of Mendoza down
the expressway of national route No. 40 (Southern Access). Close
to the capital city there are important wineries and olive growing
and processing establishments. The renowned Argentine painter, Fernando
Fader, lived here.
