This
museum comprises 12 halls devoted lo history, folklore and natural
sciences. The building that houses this museum is a replica of the
house built by San Martín on his small farm in Los Barriales where
he lived until 1823 before going into exile. The museum was inaugurated
in 1976. Its halls are devoted to the War with Paraguay; the Desert
Campaign; Folkloric, Archaeology; Religious Art and Natural Sciences
and Humanities. Exhibits include numerous agricultural and industrial
implements from the eastern region of Mendoza. Amongst the most
important pieces on show are the rocking chair that belonged to
San Martín, a replica of the Andes Army flag, furniture, belonging
to Engineer Cipolletti, who built the first dam in the mountains
in the department of Luján de Cuyo, and different items for everyday
use that belonged to Saturnino Álvarez who bought the farm from
Merceditas (San Martín's daughter) in 1872. The museum offers guided
tours for schoolchildren and hosts cultural events organized by
institutions created to preserve the memory of San Martín.
