This
museum is devoted to sacred art and operates in the Parish of Our
lady of Carrodilla. There are 19 carved images of Christ made by
the natives during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The images
belonged to different churches in the province of Mendoza. The most
noteworthy amongst these images is one carved by the Huarpe Indians
in 1750. It is made of quebracho wood and was taken by the high
bishop to the seminary in the city of Nice. One can also see the
furniture that belonged lo the Solanilla family whose summer house
with an extremely old wisteria plant surrounds one of the wings
of the parish courtyard. Exhibits also include 16th -century paintings
from the Cuzco school; a replica of the nail that pierced Christ
and an image of Our Lady of Mercy that is over two meters high and
was carved in Spain. The Church of Carrodilla was declared a National
Historical Monument and its architecture reproduces the typical
colonial models of the high mountain areas and the Argentine Northwest.
The image of the Virgin is carved in oak, has natural hair and is
holding Infant Christ and a branch of grapes in her hands. The Virgin
has a gold crown weighing half a kilo decorated with grape leaves
and precious stones, which is kept in the bank for safety reasons.
Luján de Cuyo
Luján de Cuyo lies only 16km. away from the city of Mendoza down
the expressway of national route No. 40 (Southern Access). Close
to the capital city there are important wineries and olive growing
and processing establishments. The renowned Argentine painter, Fernando
Fader, lived here.
