Molinos
Molinos lies 206km. away from the city of Salta and can be reached
by taking provincial route No. 33 and then switching to national
route No. 40. It is situated 116km. away from Cafayate and 92km.
away from San Carlos. It is a mountain town in the Calchaquí Valleys
that was founded towards the middle of the 17th century at the confluence
of the rivers Humanao and Luracatao that form the "Mill" (Molinos:
Mills). Its layout is irregular, with adobe houses, dirt roofs,
galleries and porticoes. One of its noteworthy features is its parish
church which was built in 1639 and shelters the mummified remains
of the last royalist governor Nicolás Severo de Isasmendi. Eight
kilometers away lie the Indian ruins of the Chicoana tribe dating
back to pre-Hispanic times.
