This museum operates in the house that used to belong to Guillermo
Velarde Mors, known as "Pajarito" ("Birdie"), an enthusiastic patron
of the bohemian artists of Salta. His home, which is over 200 years
old, was always open to artists. The first songs sung by Los Fronterizos
and Los Cantores del Alba were heard here, as were the musical compositions
played on the guitar by Atahualpa Yupanqui and Eduardo Falú. The
memory of Carlos Gardel is present in one of the most exhaustive
collections of music recorded by Gardel, and in the hat that the
so-called "Zorzal Criollo" (Criollo Thrush) gave Pajarito Velarde
as a gift. The museum was created upon an initiative put forward
by El Tribuno newspaper that purchased the house upon its owners
death to prevent it from being torn down. Exhibits include paintings,
furniture, musical instruments, weapons, and mementoes of artists,
sportsmen and other personalities.
Salta
The city of Salta, capital of the province, is located in a valley
that lies 1,610km. away from the City of Buenos Aires and 1,187m
above sea level. In addition to the various museums in the city,
it is also worthwhile visiting the Convent of St. Bernard with its
large wooden doorcarved by the indians, the Monument to General
Güemes and the cerro San Bernardo which offers a panoramic view
of the entire Lerma Valley.
