This
museum was inaugurated in 1991 an harbors a collection of animals
of the local fauna of the department of San Martín and Saltas Chaco
region, as well as handicraft produced by the Mataco and Chané aboriginal
groups. Amongst the stuffed animals, there are condors, eagles,
mountain cats, falcons, anteaters, vipers, rattlesnakes and porcupines.
Handicraft include ritual masks made of palo borracho wood, wickerwork,
armchairs, vessels, containers for yerba mate and tapestries woven
with sheep´s wool There are also pieces carved in lignum vitae wood
such as mates (gourds used for drinking the infusion also known
as mate), eggs, plates, religious images and fossils. Also on display
in the museum are fossil remains, funerary urns, millenary rocks
and a variety of musical instruments.
Tartagal
This town is located 365km. away from the city of Salta on national
route No. 34 and distant only 35km. from the frontier with Bolivia.
There are many native communities in this area.
