This
museum functions in an 18th -century house that belonged to the
conqueror of Chaco, General Félix Arias Rengel. It was built in
Spanish colonial style and has three flagstone courtyards. Its outstanding
features are its two-meter thick stone walls and its gable roof
with curved thigh tires made by the natives using their legs to
shape the tiles. On the ground floor temporary exhibitions are held
of the work of artists from Salta and other places. The hall devoted
to Colonial Art is on the upper floor and its exhibits include works
from the 18th and 19th centuries and a collection of pieces by local
artists from the beginning of the 20th century up to the present.
The most noteworthy exhibits include a carved wooden sculpture of
the Assumption of the Virgin proceeding from the Jesuitical missions
in Salta´s Chaco region; a portrait of Francisco de Uriburu by the
Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida, and a View of the city
of Salta painted by the Italian Carlo Penutti, which offers an interesting
sight of the city in 1874 where one can observe the Convent of St.
Bernard and the Church of St. Francis before its tower was built.
Salta
The city of Salta, capital of the province, is located in a valley
that lies 1,610km. away from the City of Buenos Aires and 1,187m
above sea level. In addition to the various museums in the city,
it is also worthwhile visiting the Convent of St. Bernard with its
large wooden doorcarved by the indians, the Monument to General
Güemes and the cerro San Bernardo which offers a panoramic view
of the entire Lerma Valley.
