Martín Leguizamón" Museum of Anthropology of Salta

This
museum was created in 1974 and houses archaeological collections
pertaining to the early, middle and late periods, as well as a collection
of ethnographic material related to the Mataco, Chiguano and Chane
Indians, and folkloric material from the Northwest. One of its halls
is devoted to the pre-Columbian city of Tastil and includes important
pieces made of ceramic, wood, metal and lithic objects. The hall
of High Altitude Areas was inaugurated recently and exhibits a mummy
discovered on the crest of the Andes Range in the Atacama region.
It also includes an ethnographic exhibition of the culture of the
"Wichi" people. Material from the Inca civilization is also on exhibition.
Salta
The city of Salta, capital of the province, is located in a valley
that lies 1,610km. away from the City of Buenos Aires and 1,187m
above sea level. In addition to the various museums in the city,
it is also worthwhile visiting the Convent of St. Bernard with its
large wooden doorcarved by the indians, the Monument to General
Güemes and the cerro San Bernardo which offers a panoramic view
of the entire Lerma Valley.
