of the images of the Christ and Virgin of Miracles - patron saints
of Salta and the 500th anniversary of the Discovery of America.
Inside the cathedral there are Portraits of the Virgin Mary and
other saints painted by Italian and Spanish painters, and by artists
from Upper Peru and Salta dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.
There are also carved polychrome images, and others modeled on size-coated
cloth proceeding from Peru, Upper Peru, the Jesuitical missions
and Salta, as well as silverwork destined for religious ceremonies
such as chalices, candlesticks, censers and tabernacles made by
mestizo artists during the 18th and 19th centuries. There are also
pieces of furniture, books and printed matter vestments and ornaments.
Salta
The city of Salta, capital of the province, is located in a valley
that lies 1,610km. away from the City of Buenos Aires and 1,187m
above sea level. In addition to the various museums in the city,
it is also worthwhile visiting the Convent of St. Bernard with its
large wooden doorcarved by the indians, the Monument to General
Güemes and the cerro San Bernardo which offers a panoramic view
of the entire Lerma Valley.
