Orán Cultural Center Tel. No. 0878-21274
Open from Mondays to Fridays from 8a.m. to 1p.m. and from 3 to 8p.m.
This museum was inaugurated in 1972 through contributions made by
the community. It operates in the building of what was formerly
the railway station of the General Belgrano line. One of its halls
is devoted to the contemporary history of railway transport that
played a very important role in the take-off and development of
the sugar industry, lumbering and oil production, all of which have
a strong impact in the region. Another hall contains exhibits that
offer insight into the economic and social and cultural aspects
of the city. A third hall exhibits ethnographic material belonging
to the aboriginal groups living in the region, namely, the Colla,
Wichi and Chané groups. There are also objects from two archaelogical
sites dating back approximately 1,000 years, and a last hall devoted
to fossils and minerals.
Orán
The name of this town is really San Román de la Nueva Orán, but
it is referred to simply as Orán. It lies to the North-east of the
province and is 276km. away from the city of Salta. To get there
one must first take national route No. 9 and then switch to national
routes 34 and 50. It was the last city founded by the Spaniards
in America.
